In the Senedd today, James Evans MS, questioned the Health Minister on work that the Welsh Government is doing to get more nurses to come into profession. In Wales currently there are 1,892 Adult Nurse Training places which will all go through a degree qualification route. However, James said:
“In Wales we need to ensure that we get enough nurses coming into the profession. The Welsh Government must do more to create as many opportunities as possible for people to enter nursing without having to go down the degree route. In the past many nurses were trained on the job, working their way through the profession as they developed the relevant skills and qualifications. If we are going to solve the recruitment issues in the NHS we need to think outside the box and move away from the mantra that everyone needs a degree to do a job.”
