After a letter from the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions confirmed that up to 50,000 pensioners will be pushed into immediate poverty because of the decision to means test the Winter Fuel Payment, James Evans MS is very concerned what this will mean for pensioners across Wales this Winter.
Shortly after their election, UK Labour announced that eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment would be means tested, meaning many pensioners who are not currently receiving additional benefits, such as pension credit, would no longer qualify for support.
DWP figures show 35,082 pensioners across Powys received the Winter Fuel Payment in 2023/24, up from 34,475 in 2022/23.
With the cold conditions now upon us, James is urging pensioners to check their eligibility for specific benefits so their Winter Fuel Support can be retained.
James Evans MS said:
“I am deeply troubled that UK Labour’s decision to means test the Winter Fuel Payment will result in 50,000 pensioners being pushed into poverty – even more concerning that this figure is set to double over the next few years.
“The recent cold spell has provided a clear reminder how important it is for the elderly to have warm homes. It’s really telling that Labour pushed ahead with this decision despite the warnings from charities, other organisations, and even Labour itself about the harm this would cause.
“I have been contacted by many pensioners who tell me they feel penalised for working hard all their lives. Their small private pensions push them above the pension credit threshold and as a result, they are losing out on crucial benefits and may have to choose between heating and eating. Any so-called budget savings from scrapping the winter fuel allowance will be wiped out with the increased rate of hospital admissions and ill-health associated with the cold. It makes no sense!
“I am urging anyone struggling this winter to contact my office where my team and I will work with you to check you’re not missing out on vital support."
