Welsh Government have announced their “refreshed five-year delivery plan” in an attempt to tackle bovine TB. The long-term goal is to deliver a TB-Free Wales by 2041.
Commenting on the plan, the FUW’s Dr Hazel Wright, said, “The FUW is once again concerned that the new delivery plan will continue to focus on increasing the raft of cattle controls conferred upon cattle keepers.”
She added, “an essential part of any future policy must include an evaluation of current control measures as a matter of urgency in order to identify those cattle controls which have a high cost to the industry whilst having a minimal impact on disease control and spread.”
Rural Affairs Minister, Lesley Griffiths MS, will provide an annual update on the progress of the delivery plan.
James said:
“We all know that bovine TB is having a terrible impact on our farmers and communities across Brecon and Radnorshire, and this has been the case for far too long.
“I welcome the intention from Welsh Government to work collaboratively with the industry – it’s clear that farmers know these issues best and should be at the heart of any policy decisions.
“However, it’s clear that this plan doesn’t offer the comprehensive solutions needed to give farmers confidence for the future.”
