James Evans MS has raised his concern that the Liberal Democrats running Powys County Council are set to sell off County Farms, with the latest farm being sold in Llanfyllin.
This is not the first time the Lib Dem / Labour run council have sold off parts of the farm estate. Last year, a decision was taken in secret to sell 281 acres of land under PCC ownership in the village in North Powys.
There has been claims that Powys County Council has an annual target to hit £10 million in sales, which could mean many more county farms are at risk of being taken into private ownership locking out a generation of young people who want to enter the industry.
James Evans MS said:
“It’s a shame to see that the Lib Dems have started to dismantle the County Farm Estate in Powys.
“Our county farms offer a fantastic opportunity for young people looking to get into the agricultural industry. During my time in the council, I sat on the farms panel and saw first hand how it helped many enthusiastic young people who eagerly want to work in the industry.
“This decision doesn’t bode well for the new Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament in Brecon and Radnorshire, who said he was going to support our young farmers. David Chadwick should apologise to all those young people who will be denied their future in farming due to the decisions of his party."
